What To Do When You’re Locked Out

You are on your way to a very important meeting, and you’re running late. You zone out and just grab what’s on top of your head. As you hear the door behind you click, that’s when you realize that you’ve left a dozen and one things behind. After spending just a few seconds in self-pity, you pick yourself up and frantically wrestle the doorknob hoping that the lock would come undone.

After what seemed like hours (but in reality it was just a few minutes, yes, we know time works differently when you’re in a panic), you realize that you don’t have the luck nor the skills to unlock the door. So what do you do?

First, you have to make sure that your house is secure. That is, aside from the door you inadvertently locked, everything else should be locked—other entrances, windows, etc. You might have to leave your house to find solutions, so you had better make sure that it’s not prone to theft or robbery.

Some of you might have a list of people you trust—might be a neighbor or a family member who lives nearby with whom you left your spare key. Now’s the right time to rummage through that list and ask for that spare key.

If you aren’t that trusting, then try out your luck with the other entrances to your house. Who knows, you might find a window or door where your meager pick locking skills might be put into good use. There are online tutorials that might be able to help but if you’ve got a deadbolt installed, better leave it with the professionals.

Our next suggestion, and probably the most efficient and practical one, is to call a locksmith. This is the best guarantee that you’ll get in, but unlike the rest of our suggestions, this does not come without costs.  How much you have to shell out will vary, depending on where you live and the type of lock you have. You may also have to pay an extra fee for an emergency call.
