Most new cars come equipped with a push start button ignition which replaces the mechanical tumbler lock ignition found on vehicles from recent years. Many of the key Fobs do not alert you when the battery in your key is about to die which could result in a vehicle lockout. While you could simply replace the battery in the key Fob to get it to function, their are those scenarios where you don't have access to a store where you could buy the specific battery type your key fob requires. All smart car keys contain a hidden emergency key blade that will open the driver side door lock, and to start the car, you hold the smart key against the steering column in some cars and the ignition button in others while trying to start the car and it will usually work. The hidden key is obvious on some key fobs, but on others looks like its all one piece. This will save you money in a lockout situation if the battery in the key dies.

The best way to prevent getting locked out of your car is by having a spare key on hand. Did you know that in some modern car's, the trunk lock release only operates when the key is in the ignition? If you lock the keys in the trunk (knock on wood), but the doors to your car are unlocked, your trunk release may not function, and the rear seats may not fold down! Most clients in this situation think that something is wrong with the electronics on the car when in fact the car is designed to lock your trunk to prevent theft from items in the trunk during a break in. In most cases, the solution would involve cutting a car key to either insert in the trunk lock, or in the ignition. This is another benefit of having a spare car key because you would be able to disengage the security system keeping the trunk locked. Another benefit of getting a spare key cut, is that its considerably cheaper to copy a car key from another functioning key, then it is to replace a lost or broken car key with nothing to duplicate it from.
Whether its a key for your house, or a key for your car, they aren't indestructible. The average key is made up of either steel, brass, iron, or aluminum. These metals are suitable for the keys you use everyday, but may start to wear down over long periods of time. The wear and tear on a key is very gradual which makes its also unnoticeable to an extent. The key might be slightly bent, have soft spots on the cuts, and be overall worn down but might still work for a long time. The problem is not damaging the key by using it but its damaging the lock we're worried about. Keys may also get worn down faster if their is a problem with the lock, the harder it is to turn inside the cylinder, the more stress is being put on the neck of the key which is where it tends to snap in most cases. Lubricating the lock is a simple fix for common sticking issues, because the lock has dirt and dust that builds up over time in the cylinder causing friction between the metal pins and the cylinder chamber ultimately putting stress on the key. If you suspect your lock is having problems, try using another key first if you have one to see if its a worn down key or a misbehaving lock.
Since the late 1990s, auto manufacturers have been outfitting vehicle ignition keys with Transponder Chips and the vehicle ignition itself with micro chips that act as an anti-theft deterrent. Their are many types of keys with transponders in them. Some have nothing but a black or gray plastic on the head of the key with no buttons. Some have remote functions with buttons to unlock and lock the vehicle. Many modern car keys made within the past 5 years or so have a longer range and advanced encryption so that you can have the key fob in your pocket and start the car with the push of a button where normally a mechanical ignition would be. The concept is the same for all transponders. The chip inside the transponder key has a code that is unique to that specific key. The immobilizer which normally lives in your instrument cluster, is the computer that the transceiver chip inside the ignition communicates with. The immobilizer computer stores codes from transponder keys in an approved keys list. When a key that has been programmed to your car is turned inside the ignition, the transceiver takes the code from the key and sends it to the immobilizer for verification. If the key is stored inside the system, the immobilizer will send a signal to engine to start. If the key is not stored inside the system, the car will not start and in some cases if too many attempts have been made the car will lock up.
Modern car key remotes that work in mechanical ignitions with buttons for unlocking and locking the vehicle remotely have two separate micro chips in them: The Transponder chip for disabling the engine immobilizer security system, and the RFID chip that controls the remote functions. The battery you install in your car key remote usually powers only the RFID chip because it needs to transmit a signal at a significantly longer range then the transponder chip. With push to start smart key fobs, the range of the transponder is also extended significantly so one can unlock, lock, and start the car with the keys in his or her pocket.

Kwisket SmartKey locks are easily identified by the tiny slit to the left of the key hole.
You may have noticed a small slit to the left of the keyhole on some Kwikset branded locks. This signifies that the lock is equipped with a Kwikset SmartKey system. The system uses five spring loaded metal wafers as opposed to the traditional pins found in standard Kwikset locks. The ANSI Grade 1 deadbolt is certified as the highest level of residential security, and is available in SmartKey. The smart key technology uses a patented sidebar like those found in vehicle ignitions which eliminate the chance of a thief bumping or picking your lock. Also because of this sidebar technology the Kwikset lock is easily re-keyed with an included smart key re-key tool allowing you to be able to change your locks without calling a locksmith.
